Also called ट्रेजरी बिल्स, Government Treasury Bill
A treasury bill is a short-term government debt instrument, issued at a discount and redeemed at face value on maturity, used to raise funds for up to one year.
Explained
Features:
- issued by NRB as the government's debt manager through auctions; the Public Debt Management Office (PDMO) of the government manages public debt;
- maturities of 28, 91, 182 and 364 days;
- sold at a discount; the difference between face value and purchase price is the investor's return;
- risk-free in local currency, highly liquid, and counted as a liquid asset for banks' statutory liquidity ratio (SLR);
- used as collateral for repo and the Standing Liquidity Facility.
Discount yield: Yield = (Face value − Price) / Price × 365 / days to maturity × 100.
T-bill rates are a key benchmark for short-term interest rates and reflect liquidity in the banking system: when liquidity is in surplus, T-bill rates fall close to the corridor floor.
Example
A 91-day T-bill of face value Rs 1,00,000 is bought for Rs 99,300. Yield = 700 / 99,300 × 365 / 91 × 100 ≈ 2.83% per year.
In Nepal
NRB's monetary policy statistics list T-bills of 28, 91, 182 and 364 days; the weighted average 91-day T-bill rate was 2.94% in mid-June 2025.
- सरकारको ऋण व्यवस्थापकका रूपमा राष्ट्र बैंक ले बोलकबोलमार्फत जारी गर्छ; सार्वजनिक ऋण व्यवस्थापन कार्यालयले सरकारी ऋण व्यवस्थापन गर्छ;
- अवधि २८, ९१, १८२ र ३६४ दिन;
- बट्टामा बिक्री हुन्छ; अङ्कित मूल्य र खरिद मूल्यको फरक नै लगानीकर्ताको प्रतिफल हो;
- स्वदेशी मुद्रामा जोखिमरहित, उच्च तरल र बैंकको वैधानिक तरलता अनुपात मा गनिने;
