Money Market
मुद्रा बजार
Also called Short-term Funds Market
The money market is the market for borrowing and lending short-term funds, usually with maturities of up to one year, through instruments such as treasury bills, interbank loans, repo and call money.
Explained
Features: short maturity, high liquidity, low risk, large-value wholesale deals, and participants are mainly the central bank, government, banks and financial institutions.
Instruments in Nepal:
- Treasury bills of 28, 91, 182 and 364 days issued by NRB on behalf of the government;
- interbank borrowing and lending among BFIs;
- NRB's repo, reverse repo, deposit collection auctions and outright operations;
- the Standing Liquidity Facility and Standing Deposit Facility of the interest rate corridor;
- certificates of deposit and call deposits.
Functions: helps banks manage day-to-day liquidity, gives the government short-term finance, and is the channel through which NRB's monetary policy affects interest rates. The weighted average interbank rate and 91-day T-bill rate are watched as key short-term rates.
It is regulated by NRB, unlike the capital market, which SEBON regulates.
In Nepal
Monetary Policy 2082/83 reported the weighted average interbank rate at 2.99% for the review period and the 91-day T-bill rate at 2.94% in mid-June 2025, both close to the SDF rate due to excess liquidity.
