Repo
Also called Repurchase Agreement,
A transaction in which NRB buys government securities from banks with an agreement that the banks will buy them back on a set date at a set price, injecting short-term liquidity.
Explained
In a repo the bank effectively borrows from NRB using securities as collateral:
- The bank sells eligible securities (treasury bills, development bonds, NRB bonds) to NRB.
- NRB credits the bank's account, adding reserves to the banking system.
- On maturity the bank buys the securities back at a higher price; the difference is the repo interest.
Types used by NRB: repo auctions (banks bid for the amount and rate) for regular liquidity injection; the standing liquidity facility works on a similar collateralised basis at the bank rate.
The NRB Act 2058, Section 45(2) allows NRB to do repo and reverse repo against government or NRB securities for short-term liquidity management.
Repo is used when liquidity is tight and interbank rates are rising above the policy rate. It is temporary, unlike an outright purchase.
Example
NRB buys Rs 10 billion of T-bills from banks under a 7-day repo; after 7 days the banks repay Rs 10 billion plus interest and take the bills back.
