Reverse Repo
Also called Reverse Repurchase Agreement,
A transaction in which NRB sells government securities to banks with an agreement to buy them back later at a set price, temporarily absorbing excess liquidity.
Explained
Reverse repo is the mirror image of repo:
- NRB sells securities from its portfolio to banks.
- Banks pay NRB, so reserves leave the banking system.
- At maturity NRB buys the securities back at a higher price, paying the banks interest.
It is used when there is excess liquidity and the interbank rate is falling toward the floor of the corridor. The NRB Act 2058, Section 45(2) authorises it for short-term liquidity management.
NRB's other absorption tools are the deposit collection auction, the standing deposit facility, outright sale and NRB bonds. Reverse repo needs NRB to hold enough securities, which is one reason NRB also uses deposit auctions and its own bonds.
Note on terminology: in Nepal (as in this glossary), repo and reverse repo are named from the bank's side of the transaction with NRB, so repo injects and reverse repo absorbs liquidity.
