Interbank Rate
Also called Weighted Average Interbank Rate, Interbank Lending Rate,
The interest rate at which banks and financial institutions lend short-term funds to one another. NRB uses the weighted average interbank rate of BFIs as the operating target of monetary policy.
Explained
Banks with surplus funds lend to banks that are short, usually overnight or for a few days. In Nepal:
- Operating target: the weighted average interbank rate of BFIs is the operating target of monetary policy, and NRB runs open market operations to keep it around the policy rate.
- Corridor: the rate is meant to move within the interest rate corridor, between the SDF rate (floor) and the SLF/bank rate (ceiling). If banks are short they can borrow from NRB at the SLF rate, so the interbank rate should not rise much above it; if they have surplus, they can place funds at the SDF rate, so it should not fall much below it.
- Rules: under Directive 2 (point 20) of the Unified Directive, lending between licensed institutions must be done only as interbank transactions, not as regular credit facilities, and interbank borrowing may be for at most 7 days.
The rate is a quick barometer of liquidity: low when liquidity is abundant, high when it is tight.
In Nepal
In mid-June 2025 the weighted average interbank rate stood at 3.0%, equal to the SDF floor of 3.0% at that time, reflecting surplus liquidity (NRB Monetary Policy 2082/83).
