NRB rules
NRB limit: Floor (SDF rate) 2.75%, policy rate 4.25%, ceiling (SLF rate / bank rate) 5.75%
NRB Monetary Policy 2082/83 First Quarterly Review (kept unchanged in NRB Monetary Policy 2083/84) · applies from . Limits change with each monetary policy and directive, so check the latest notice before the exam.
A band of short-term interest rates set by NRB, with the standing deposit facility rate as the floor, the standing liquidity facility rate (bank rate) as the ceiling and the policy rate in between, within which the interbank rate is kept.
Explained
How it works:
- Ceiling – SLF rate / bank rate: a bank short of funds can borrow from NRB at this rate, so no bank needs to pay much more in the interbank market.
- Floor – SDF rate: a bank with surplus funds can deposit them with NRB at this rate, so no bank should lend for much less.
- Policy rate: the signal in the middle. NRB uses open market operations to keep the weighted average interbank rate close to it.
Current corridor (set by the first quarterly review of 2082/83 on 1 December 2025 and unchanged in Monetary Policy 2083/84):
| Element | Rate |
|---|---|
| Ceiling: SLF rate / bank rate | 5.75% |
| Policy rate | 4.25% |
| Floor: SDF rate | 2.75% |
The corridor width is 3 percentage points and the policy rate is symmetric. NRB's stated policy is to narrow the gap between the bounds gradually, and Monetary Policy 2083/84 says the corridor may be narrowed further as needed. A narrower corridor gives tighter control over short-term rates and better monetary transmission.
Example
If surplus liquidity pushes the interbank rate down to 2.8%, banks would rather place money at NRB's SDF at 2.75% than lend much lower, so the rate stays near the floor; NRB may then absorb liquidity to move it back toward 4.25%.
In Nepal
Through much of 2082/83 surplus liquidity kept the interbank rate near the floor of the corridor.
