Single Obligor LimitSOL
Also called Single borrower limit, Large exposure limit
Formula
Single obligor exposure ratio = (Fund-based + non-fund-based facilities to one borrower or connected group) ÷ Core capital × 100
- Numerator
- Total fund-based loans and non-fund-based facilities to one customer or group of related customers
- Denominator
- Core capital (Tier 1) of the immediately preceding quarter, certified by the internal auditor
NRB limit: Maximum 25% of core capital (fund-based plus non-fund-based); up to 30% for export, small and medium industries, transport infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, tourism, cement, iron and other manufacturing; up to 50% for pure hydropower, renewable energy, transmission line and cable car projects
NRB Unified Directive 2082 (Class A, B, C), issued Magh 2082 · applies from . Limits change with each monetary policy and directive, so check the latest notice before the exam.
The single obligor limit is the maximum a bank may lend, in fund-based and non-fund-based facilities together, to one customer or to a group of related customers, set as a percentage of the bank's core capital.
What the value tells you
A higher ratio means more of the bank's capital is exposed to one borrower or group; exceeding the limit is a breach that requires extra provisioning.
Explained
The limit stops a bank from putting too much of its capital at risk with one borrower or business group (concentration risk). It is set in Directive 3 of the Unified Directive.
Rules
- Core capital is taken from the balance sheet of the immediately preceding quarter certified by the internal auditor.
- Fund-based loans and non-fund-based facilities (LC, guarantees) are counted together for the borrower and its connected group.
- A group with both 30%-eligible and other businesses has an overall cap of 30%, with the non-eligible part within 25%.
- For pure hydro, transmission, renewable energy and cable car projects, up to 50%; such a group can lend to its non-hydro businesses only up to 25% within the 50%.
- Exempt: loans against fixed deposits, government securities and NRB bonds, loans on unconditional guarantees of multilateral institutions or internationally rated banks, and Class A loans to Nepal Oil Nigam, Nepal Food Corporation, Agriculture Inputs Company and Salt Trading for listed imports.
- Lending above the limit breaches the directive and requires an additional 100% provision on the excess.
Example
Core capital Rs 20 arba: general single obligor limit = 25% × 20 = Rs 5 arba; for a cement or export borrower 30% = Rs 6 arba; for a pure hydropower project 50% = Rs 10 arba.
