Sectoral Credit Concentration
Also called Sector concentration limit, Sectoral exposure

- Denominator
- Total outstanding loans and advances of the bank
NRB limit: Maximum 40% of total outstanding loans in any one sector; real estate and housing loans together maximum 25% and other real estate (land purchase and plotting) maximum 10% of total loans
NRB Unified Directive 2082 (Class A, B, C), issued Magh 2082 · applies from . Limits change with each monetary policy and directive, so check the latest notice before the exam.
Sectoral credit concentration is the share of a bank's total loans given to one sector of the economy; NRB caps it to avoid too much exposure to any single sector.
What the value tells you
A higher share means the bank's asset quality depends more on that sector's health; staying within limits spreads risk.
Explained
If many loans go to one sector, a shock to that sector (for example a real estate slump) can hit the whole bank. NRB's Directive 3, point 11 requires banks to monitor sector concentration with internal policies, using the sector list in Form 3.1.
Rules
- A bank (other than one licensed to lend only to one sector) may lend at most 40% of its total outstanding loans to any one sector; sectors with lower existing limits keep them. Any excess must be deducted from core capital.
- Two-tier monitoring by core capital: Tier 1, sector exposure from 50% to 100% of core capital, monitored at least quarterly by the bank; Tier 2, sector exposure above 100% of core capital, needs board approval and an annual board decision on keeping it.
- Real estate: residential home, commercial building and apartment, commercial complex and other real estate loans together at most 25% of total loans, and land purchase and plotting at most 10%; excess gets a 150% risk weight. Personal home loans up to Rs 3 crore are excluded.
- NRB may order extra provisions for concentrated sectors.
"Loans in one sector" include loans, guarantees, commitments and LCs to customers in the same sector.
