Connected Borrowers (Group of Related Customers)
आपसी सम्बन्ध भएका ग्राहकहरूको समूह
Also called Related party group, Borrower group, Connected lending
Connected borrowers are customers linked by ownership, management, family ties, guarantees or shared collateral, whom NRB treats as one group for the single obligor limit.
Explained
If related borrowers were treated separately, a bank could lend far more to one business family than its single obligor limit allows. NRB's Directive 3, point 7 treats these as one group:
- Two companies where one holds 25% or more of the other's shares.
- An individual, company director, private company shareholder, partner or proprietor, together with their spouse, children, adopted children, parents, stepmother and dependent siblings, whether living together or separately.
- Companies in which such persons alone or together hold 25% or more of shares.
- Companies in which they hold less than 25% but control management as chairperson, chief executive, or by appointing more than 25% of directors.
- Firms or companies that present themselves as one group.
- A customer and another customer it has guaranteed (with a possible conditional exemption for national-priority hydropower).
- Several persons borrowing against the same collateral.
- For other institutions, persons directly involved in running them and their family.
Bodies more than 50% owned by the Government of Nepal are treated as separate groups. Banks must send group records to NRB every six months.
