Probability of Default (PD)PD
Also called Default probability
Formula
PD = Number of borrowers who defaulted in the period ÷ Number of performing borrowers at the start of the period (historical default rate, adjusted for forward-looking information)
- Numerator
- Number (or amount) of exposures that defaulted within the horizon
- Denominator
- Number (or amount) of performing exposures at the start of the horizon
NRB limit: Prudential floor of 2.5% PD for credit exposures, regardless of model results

Probability of default is the estimated likelihood that a borrower will default within a given time horizon, such as 12 months or the loan's life.
What the value tells you
A higher PD means the borrower or segment is more likely to default, raising expected credit loss.
Explained
PD is one of the three inputs of expected credit loss (ECL = PD × LGD × EAD). Stage 1 loans use a 12-month PD; Stage 2 and Stage 3 loans use lifetime PD.
NRB guidance on PD (ECL Guidelines, 2024)
- Derive PD from historical default migration rates and other data, internal and external ratings.
- Adjust PD for forward-looking macroeconomic information.
- Use at least five years of historical data; smoothing must be validated by the risk management department.
- Internal rating scales may be linked to external ratings; proxies should be avoided.
- For foreign-currency exposures to foreign sovereigns, use a sovereign PD linked to external ratings.
- A prudential floor of 2.5% applies regardless of model results, to be reviewed after five years of implementation.
PD also helps identify a significant increase in credit risk: an absolute lifetime PD of 5% or more, or a 100% relative rise, signals Stage 2.
