Individual deposits are placed by natural persons; institutional deposits are placed by firms, companies, government bodies, cooperatives and other organisations. NRB regulates the two differently.
Explained
Why the distinction matters Individual deposits are many, small and stable. Institutional deposits are large, rate-sensitive and can be withdrawn in bulk, which creates liquidity and concentration risk.
NRB rules (Unified Directives 15 and 16)
- Concentration cap: a BFI may take institutional deposits from any single firm, company or organisation only up to a fixed share of its total deposits.
- Sector cap: deposits of government bodies and corporations, public limited companies, saving and credit cooperatives and funds under them together may not exceed a fixed share of total deposits.
- Tenure: the minimum fixed deposit tenure is longer for institutions than for individuals, and institutional fixed deposits cannot be paid out prematurely before six months.
- Account type: only natural persons and non-profit bodies may open saving accounts; companies use current, call or fixed accounts.
- Deposit insurance: covers only natural persons' saving and fixed deposits.
- No extra benefits: no fee, commission or other benefit beyond the coupon rate may be given to any depositor, which stops banks from luring institutional deposits with side payments.
