A deposit kept with a bank for a fixed period at an agreed interest rate, repayable with interest at maturity.
Explained
NRB's Unified Directive defines a fixed (मुद्दती) account as an account of money kept with a BFI to remain deposited for a fixed period.
Features
- Higher interest than saving accounts because the bank can use the money for longer.
- Interest may be paid periodically (monthly, quarterly) or at maturity.
- A fixed deposit receipt is issued; it can be pledged as collateral, and BFIs may not charge any fee when lending against their own fixed deposit receipts.
NRB rules (Unified Directives 15 and 16)
- Minimum tenure applies: shorter for individual than for institutional fixed deposits.
- BFIs may not accept fixed deposits that can be withdrawn at any time at the pre-agreed rate; institutional fixed deposits may not be paid out before six months.
- For individuals, interest and maturity proceeds must be credited to the depositor's saving account.
- A PAN is required when a natural person places a fixed deposit above a set amount.
- Remittance-funded fixed deposits get an extra interest premium.
Example
Rs 1,00,000 placed for 1 year at 6% with interest paid at maturity earns Rs 6,000 interest (before tax), so Rs 1,06,000 is credited to the depositor's saving account on maturity.
