An interest-bearing deposit account kept for saving, from which the holder can withdraw at any time; in Nepal it may be opened only by natural persons and not-for-profit organisations.
Explained
Saving accounts encourage household thrift while keeping money accessible.
Features
- Interest is paid, lower than on fixed deposits.
- Withdrawals allowed any time; a cheque book or debit card may be issued.
- Banks may set a minimum balance, but cannot deduct money because the balance falls below it, and must pay interest on the minimum balance too.
NRB rules (Unified Directives 15 and 16)
- Only natural persons and organisations established without a profit motive may open saving accounts; saving accounts of other entities must be closed. Companies may open other interest-bearing accounts.
- The difference between interest rates on the various saving products of an institution is capped, and when the rate on one saving product changes, all saving products must move together.
- When a bank collects loan interest quarterly, it must credit interest on saving deposits every three months; interest is calculated on the daily balance.
- An individual's fixed deposit must be linked to a saving account into which interest and maturity proceeds are credited.
- A saving account without transactions for more than three years must be made dormant.
