Core Deposit
Also called Stable deposit, Sticky deposit
The stable portion of a bank's deposits that is unlikely to leave even when interest rates change, typically small retail current, saving and fixed deposits from a loyal customer base.
Explained
Bankers split deposits into core (stable) and volatile (hot) money.
Core deposits usually include
- Small saving and current balances of individuals and small businesses.
- Retail fixed and recurring deposits that are regularly renewed.
- Salary and remittance accounts with steady inflows.
Volatile deposits usually include
- Large institutional and call deposits that move for a slightly higher rate.
- Deposits brokered or attracted only by premium rates.
Why core deposits matter
- They are a cheaper and more reliable source of funds for long-term lending.
- They lower liquidity risk and improve liquidity ratios such as LCR and NSFR, which assign higher stability to retail deposits.
- They give a bank pricing power, since customers stay even if rates fall slightly.
Nepal context NRB limits volatile funding through caps on call deposits and institutional deposits, insurance that encourages small individual deposits, and the credit-to-deposit ratio rule, which links lending capacity to deposits. Banks that rely on institutional deposits faced pressure during liquidity crunches when such deposits moved to whichever bank offered more.
