Inflation
Also called Price Inflation,
A sustained rise in the general price level of goods and services, which reduces the purchasing power of money. In Nepal it is measured by the change in the consumer price index compiled by NRB.
Explained
Types by cause:
- Demand-pull: too much spending relative to output, often from rapid money and credit growth.
- Cost-push: higher input costs such as fuel, wages or imported goods.
- Imported inflation: very important for Nepal because of the open border and the fixed exchange rate with India, so Indian prices pass through strongly.
By speed: creeping, walking, galloping and hyperinflation. Related terms: deflation (falling prices), disinflation (slowing inflation), stagflation (high inflation with stagnant growth).
Measurement: year-on-year change in the consumer price index, also shown for food and non-food groups; the annual average is also reported.
NRB's role: price stability is a core objective under the NRB Act. Monetary Policy 2082/83 aimed to keep inflation around 5.0%; Monetary Policy 2083/84 projects inflation within 5.5%, noting that the ten-month average for 2082/83 was only 2.66% but year-on-year inflation reached 5.04% in Baisakh 2083 due to fuel and food prices.
NRB fights inflation by raising the policy rate, absorbing liquidity and tightening credit; it can ease when inflation is low.
Example
If the CPI rises from 150 to 157.5 over a year, inflation = (157.5 − 150) / 150 × 100 = 5%.
In Nepal
Because the rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee, inflation in Nepal closely follows Indian inflation over time.
