Fixed Interest Rate
TermNRBRBBNBLADBLLok Sewa
Also called Fixed rate
A fixed interest rate stays the same for the agreed period of the loan, regardless of changes in the bank's base rate or market rates.
Explained
A fixed rate gives the borrower certainty about instalments; the bank carries the interest rate risk, so fixed rates are usually set somewhat higher than floating rates.
NRB rules (Directive 15)
- Banks must publish both fixed and floating rates for all term loans.
- Individual term loans with a repayment period of more than one year (home, auto, hire purchase and similar instalment loans) must carry a fixed rate for the whole term, unless the customer asks for a floating rate linked to the base rate.
- Fixed rates for new loans are set and published only half-yearly.
- With the borrower's written consent, the fixed rate may be reviewed first after 7 years and then every 5 years.
- Changing loan terms to comply with this rule is not restructuring.
- For fixed-rate loans, prepayment or swap within 2 years can carry an extra 1% fee over the normal prepayment fee.
