Corporate Banking
Also called Wholesale banking, Corporate credit,
Banking services for large companies, institutions and government entities, covering large loans, working capital, project and consortium finance, trade finance, cash management and treasury products.
Explained
Corporate banking serves a small number of large clients whose individual exposures are big.
Typical products
- Term loans and project finance, often in consortium with other banks.
- Working capital: overdraft, cash credit, trust receipt and demand loans.
- Trade finance: letters of credit, bank guarantees, import and export bills.
- Cash management, payroll, collection accounts and foreign exchange.
Characteristics
- Each client is assessed individually through detailed credit appraisal, financial analysis and security valuation.
- Relationship managers handle the client.
- Concentration risk is high, so regulatory limits such as single obligor and sectoral limits are important.
- Institutional deposits from corporates are larger but more volatile than retail deposits.
Nepal NRB limits concentration through the single obligor limit and limits institutional deposits: a BFI may not take more than a fixed share of its total deposits from any one firm or institution (Unified Directive 16).
