Risk Appetite and Tolerance Limit
जोखिम वहन क्षमता र सहनसीमा
Also called Risk Appetite, Risk Tolerance
Risk appetite is the amount and type of risk a bank's board is willing to take to meet its objectives; the tolerance limit is the maximum deviation from that level the bank can accept.
Explained
NRB Directive 5 gives these responsibilities to the board:
- identify the risk the institution wants to bear (risk appetite) and acceptable limits (tolerance limit) and set the risk strategy; the board is responsible for overall risk management;
- keep an internal control system so that risks stay within the appetite and tolerance;
- set the BFI's own credit limits (sectoral, purpose-wise, NPL limits) and liquidity limits (CRR, SLR, CD ratio and similar) considering risk appetite and regulatory limits;
- approve policies for material risks, review them at least once a year, and study risk reports at least quarterly.
A written Risk Appetite Statement usually covers capital ratios, NPL ceilings, concentration limits, liquidity ratios, and qualitative risks such as reputation and compliance.
