Post-dated ChequePDC
Also called Forward-dated cheque
A cheque bearing a date later than the date it is issued, which cannot be paid before that date.
Explained
Post-dated cheques are often used for instalments, rent and supplier credit.
Rules
- The bank must not pay before the date written on the cheque. A post-dated cheque presented early is returned; NCHL-ECC lists "cheque is post-dated" as a return reason, and an invalid (post-dated or stale) date is a reason the paying bank can reject a cheque.
- Under the NCHL-ECC Operating Rules, ECC accepts post-dated cheques submitted by customers to the presenting bank; they are kept with the presenting bank until the due date, and each bank decides how to handle them under its internal policy.
- The drawer can stop payment before the date, but stopping without a justified reason (loss, theft or unauthorised use) can lead to blacklisting if the cheque then bounces.
NRB restriction Under Unified Directive 2, BFIs may not lend against the security of any kind of cheque, and because domestic cheques can be cleared the same day, BFIs may not purchase them. So a post-dated cheque cannot be used as loan collateral.
Risk for the holder The drawer may not have funds on the due date; the holder then follows the cheque dishonour process.
