Explained
Rule in Nepal The NCHL Electronic Cheque Clearing Operating Rules, which are based on NRB's Rule Book, define a stale cheque as one presented after six months from the date of the cheque, or after any shorter period specified on the cheque. Stale cheques are returned automatically by the clearing house before they reach the paying bank. The ECC return code list includes "outdated (staled) cheque".
Shorter validity The drawer can print or write a shorter validity on the cheque, and some public sector cheques carry a shorter validity printed on them, in which case that period applies.
What the holder can do Ask the drawer to issue a fresh cheque, or to revalidate the old one by changing the date and signing the change in full, if the bank's policy accepts revalidation.
Why the rule exists A very old cheque may indicate that the drawer's circumstances, account or intention have changed, so paying it carries risk for the bank.
Do not confuse A post-dated cheque is presented too early; a stale cheque is presented too late.
