The process by which a cheque deposited at one bank (presenting bank) is sent to the bank on which it is drawn (paying bank) for payment, and the resulting amounts are settled between the banks.
Explained
Steps
- The customer deposits a cheque drawn on another bank.
- The presenting (collecting) bank verifies and sends it to the clearing house.
- The paying bank checks funds, signature, date, crossing and alterations and either honours or returns it with a reason.
- Net positions of all banks are calculated and settled in their accounts with NRB.
- The customer's account is credited; the amount becomes available after clearing.
In Nepal
- Clearing was earlier done through clearing houses run by NRB. Today almost all cheque clearing runs on the image-based NCHL Electronic Cheque Clearing (ECC) system operated by Nepal Clearing House Limited, and the net clearing position is settled through the Nepal settlement system at NRB.
- Because domestic cheques can be cleared the same day, NRB bars BFIs from purchasing domestic cheques and from lending against cheques (Unified Directive 2).
- BFIs may not charge customers any fee for electronic clearing of cheques below a set amount (Directive 20).
Return reasons Insufficient funds, signature mismatch, post-dated or stale date, amount in words and figures differ, altered MICR, mutilation, apparent alteration, or alteration not authenticated by the drawer.
