Non-performing Loan (NPL / NPA)NPL
Also called Non-performing asset, NPA, Bad loan,
A non-performing loan is a loan on which principal or interest has been overdue for more than three months, or that NRB rules otherwise treat as impaired; in Nepal it covers substandard, doubtful, loss and restructured or rescheduled loans.
Explained
NRB's Directive 2 splits all loans into performing (pass and watchlist) and non-performing loans.
Non-performing loan classes
- Substandard: overdue 3 to 6 months (25% provision)
- Doubtful: overdue 6 months to 1 year (50%)
- Loss: overdue more than 1 year, or any of the loss triggers such as misuse of the loan, borrower missing, bankruptcy, auction started, blacklisted borrower, inadequate collateral (100%)
- Restructured or rescheduled loans under point 8 of the directive
Why NPLs matter
- Interest on NPLs is not recognised as income until received, so profit falls.
- Provisions eat into profit and capital.
- High NPLs reduce lending capacity and can trigger prompt corrective action.
Managing NPLs: early monitoring, follow-up and negotiation, restructuring where viable, legal action under the Debt Recovery Act, auction of collateral, taking collateral as non-banking assets, blacklisting, and finally write-off. A non-performing loan can be upgraded only after all overdue principal and interest are paid and it stays regular for 3 months.
In Nepal
Monetary Policy 2083/84 notes that while overall financial stability indicators are satisfactory, rising non-performing loans in some institutions and the resulting pressure on capital need close monitoring.
