Loan Restructuring and Rescheduling
Also called Restructuring, Rescheduling, Restructured loan
Rescheduling extends the repayment period of a loan; restructuring changes its nature, terms or covenants. Both are used when a borrower's repayment capacity weakens but recovery is still likely.
Explained
When allowed (Directive 2, point 8): the borrower must submit a written action plan; documents and security must be adequate; the bank must be convinced of recovery and business continuity; and at least 25% of interest due must be recovered. A decline in repayment capacity means, for example, short-term cost or time overruns or cash-flow mismatch, adverse external conditions, delisting, or inadequate actual or projected finances.
Provisioning on restructured loans
- Performing loans restructured for the first time, with equal instalments and a grace period of at most one year: at least 12.5%.
- Other performing loans restructured: at least 25%.
- Substandard, doubtful or loss loans keep their existing provision.
- Provision cannot be reduced until the loan stays regular for two consecutive years; then it can be upgraded to pass.
Other rules: interest due cannot be capitalised; share-backed loans cannot be restructured; interest rate stays linked to the base rate; the basis must be kept in each file. NRB has also allowed time-bound relief restructuring (for example contractors, floods, Gen Z protest-affected borrowers) with 10% interest recovery and lighter provisions.
In Nepal
ShareSansar (15 July 2026) reported that restructuring relief for contractors with dues from public bodies was extended to Ashoj 2083, with 5% provision on such loans.
