Liquid Assets
Also called Liquid Funds
Assets that a bank can convert into cash quickly and with little loss, such as cash in vault, balances with NRB and other banks, call money and government securities.
Explained
Which assets count as liquid depends on the measure:
- For SLR (Directive 13): Government of Nepal securities (net of borrowing against them), CRR balance at NRB, vault cash, CRR balances kept by B and C classes with commercial banks, call balances of provincial-level institutions, rupee bonds of international financial institutions, and deposits placed with NRB under open market operations.
- For the NLA ratio (CAF Form No. 8): cash, bank balances, money at call and short notice, investment in government securities and placements up to 90 days.
- For the Basel LCR: unencumbered high-quality liquid assets.
Holding liquid assets has a cost, because they earn less than loans. Banks therefore try to hold enough to meet regulation and expected outflows without hurting profitability.
