Gross Domestic ProductGDP
Real GDP, Nominal GDP
GDP is the total market value of all final goods and services produced within a country's borders during a period, usually a fiscal year.
Explained
GDP counts production inside the country, whoever produces it, and only final goods to avoid double counting.
Three measurement methods (they should give the same total):
- Production (value-added) method: sum of value added by agriculture, industry and services.
- Expenditure method: GDP = C + I + G + (X − M), i.e. consumption + investment + government spending + net exports.
- Income method: wages + rent + interest + profit + mixed income (plus indirect taxes less subsidies, and depreciation for GDP at market price).
Nominal GDP uses current prices; real GDP uses constant prices of a base year and shows actual growth. The GDP deflator = nominal GDP / real GDP × 100.
In Nepal the National Statistics Office (NSO) publishes national accounts estimates, including quarterly GDP. Services form the largest sector, followed by agriculture and industry.
Example
If C = Rs 500, I = Rs 150, G = Rs 120, exports = Rs 40 and imports = Rs 210 (in billions), GDP = 500 + 150 + 120 + (40 − 210) = Rs 600 billion.
In Nepal
NRB's Monetary Policy 2082/83 (August 2025) cited the NSO estimate of 4.61% economic growth for 2024/25, against 3.67% in the previous year, with the government targeting 6.0% growth for 2025/26.
