Per Capita Income
Also called Per Capita GDP, Per Capita GNI
Per capita income is a country's total national income divided by its population, showing the average income per person in a year.
Explained
Per capita income is the most common single indicator of a country's average living standard.
- Per capita GDP = GDP / population.
- Per capita GNI = GNI / population. The World Bank classifies countries into low, lower-middle, upper-middle and high income using GNI per capita in US dollars (Atlas method).
Limitations:
- It is an average and hides inequality between rich and poor and between regions.
- It ignores non-market activity such as household work and subsistence farming, which is large in Nepal.
- Exchange-rate conversion can distort comparisons; purchasing power parity (PPP) adjusts for price differences.
- It does not measure health, education or environment; the Human Development Index adds these.
In Nepal, NSO publishes per capita GDP and GNI in rupees and US dollars with its annual national accounts estimates. Remittance raises household income and is reflected in GNI and gross national disposable income rather than GDP.
Example
If GNI is Rs 6,000 billion and population is 3 crore, per capita GNI = 6,000,000,000,000 / 30,000,000 = Rs 2,00,000.
