Economic Impact of Remittance
Also called Remittance Economy,
The economic impact of remittance refers to how money sent home by migrant workers affects household income, consumption, poverty, the balance of payments, banking liquidity and the wider economy.
Explained
Positive effects:
- Household income and poverty: raises consumption, education and health spending and has reduced poverty.
- External sector: the largest source of foreign exchange; it finances the large trade deficit and keeps the current account and balance of payments in surplus, building foreign exchange reserves.
- Banking: inflows through formal channels raise deposits and liquidity, supporting lending.
- Government revenue: imports financed by remittance generate customs and VAT revenue.
Negative effects and risks:
- Consumption and import dependence: much is spent on imported goods, widening the trade deficit.
- Dutch disease: inflows can raise prices and the real exchange rate, hurting agriculture and export competitiveness.
- Labour shortage and weaker domestic production.
- Vulnerability to shocks in destination countries and oil prices.
- Informal channels (hundi) create AML and revenue risks.
Policy response: encourage formal channels, remittance savings accounts and foreign employment bonds, and channel remittance into productive investment.
In Nepal
Monetary Policy 2082/83 reported that in the eleven months of 2024/25 remittance inflows rose 15.5% in rupee terms (12.7% in US dollars), Nepalis leaving for foreign employment (new and renewal) rose 11.4% to 760,391, and because remittance growth outpaced imports, both the current account and balance of payments were in surplus.
