Foreign Trade
Also called International Trade, Trade Deficit,
Foreign trade is the exchange of goods and services across national borders through exports and imports; the gap between exports and imports is the trade balance.
Explained
Trade balance = exports − imports. A negative balance is a trade deficit. It is part of the current account of the balance of payments.
Nepal's pattern:
- persistent, large trade deficit: imports are many times exports;
- heavy dependence on India, which is the largest trading partner, followed by China;
- major imports include petroleum products, iron and steel, vehicles, machinery, gold, medicines and food; exports are a narrow basket of goods such as edible oils, carpets, garments, yarn and agricultural goods;
- the deficit is financed mainly by remittance, along with tourism and grants.
Causes of the deficit: narrow production base, supply constraints, remittance-driven consumption, landlocked geography and high transport cost.

Nepal joined the WTO on 23 April 2004 and trades under bilateral agreements, notably with India.
In Nepal
Monetary Policy 2082/83 reported that in the eleven months of 2024/25 merchandise exports rose 77.8% to Rs 247.57 billion and imports rose 13.1% to Rs 1,644.80 billion, so the trade deficit widened 6.3% to Rs 1,397.23 billion.
- लामो समयदेखि ठूलो व्यापार घाटा: आयात निर्यातको कैयौँ गुणा;
- सबैभन्दा ठूलो व्यापार साझेदार भारत, त्यसपछि चीन;
- मुख्य आयात पेट्रोलियम पदार्थ, फलाम र स्टिल, सवारी साधन, मेसिनरी, सुन, औषधि र खाद्यान्न; निर्यातमा खाने तेल, गलैँचा, तयारी पोसाक, धागो र कृषि उपज जस्ता सीमित वस्तु;
