The WTO is the international organisation that sets and enforces the rules of trade between nations, provides a forum for trade negotiations and settles trade disputes.
Explained
Establishment: 1 January 1995, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, succeeding the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). It has 166 members accounting for about 98% of world trade.
Functions:
- overseeing implementation of trade agreements (goods, services under GATS, intellectual property under TRIPS);
- providing a venue for trade negotiations;
- resolving trade disputes between members;
- reviewing members' national trade policies;
- providing technical help and training to developing countries;
- cooperating with other international organisations such as the IMF and World Bank.
Core principles: non-discrimination (most-favoured-nation and national treatment), freer trade through negotiation, predictability, fair competition, and special treatment for developing and least developed countries.
Nepal: Nepal became a WTO member on 23 April 2004. Membership opened services such as banking to foreign participation within Nepal's commitments and required reforms in trade, intellectual property and customs.
