Economic Liberalisation and Globalisation
आर्थिक उदारीकरण र विश्वव्यापीकरण
Also called Liberalization, Globalization, LPG (Liberalisation, Privatisation, Globalisation)
Economic liberalisation is reducing government controls so markets and the private sector play a larger role; globalisation is the growing integration of national economies through trade, investment, finance, technology and people.
Explained
Liberalisation measures: deregulation of industry and prices, interest rate liberalisation, opening sectors to private and foreign investment, trade liberalisation (lower tariffs, fewer quotas), currency convertibility, and privatisation of state enterprises.
Nepal's experience: liberalisation gathered pace from the mid-1980s and especially in the 1990s with the Industrial Policy, privatisation of public enterprises, entry of joint-venture and private banks, freeing of interest rates, current account convertibility, and capital market reforms. Nepal joined the WTO on 23 April 2004.
Benefits: competition and efficiency, more choice, foreign investment and technology, growth of banking, telecom, aviation and services.
Costs and criticisms: competition hurt domestic industry, widening trade deficit, rising inequality, exposure to external shocks, and dependence on remittance.
Globalisation channels: trade, FDI, portfolio flows, migration and remittance, technology and information, and international institutions (WTO, IMF, World Bank).
