अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय मुद्रा कोष
Also called अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय मुद्राकोष
The IMF is an international organisation that promotes global monetary cooperation and financial stability through surveillance of economies, lending to countries with balance of payments problems, and capacity development.
Explained
Origin: established in 1944 at the Bretton Woods conference by 44 founding countries, after the Great Depression of the 1930s. It now has 191 member countries.
Three main functions:
- Surveillance: monitoring economic and financial developments and advising members, mainly through annual Article IV consultations.
- Lending: financial assistance to members facing balance of payments problems; concessional facilities such as the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) serve low-income countries.
- Capacity development: technical assistance and training in monetary policy, banking supervision, tax, statistics and public finance.
Quota and SDR: each member's quota determines its subscription, voting power and access to financing; the IMF also allocates Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), an international reserve asset.
Nepal: Nepal became a member on 6 September 1961. The IMF regularly conducts Article IV consultations with Nepal and has provided several lending arrangements and extensive technical assistance to NRB on monetary operations, supervision and statistics.
