Exchange Equalization Fund
सटही समीकरण कोष
Also called Exchange Fluctuation Fund, Exchange Equalization Reserve
A statutory reserve that a bank dealing in foreign exchange builds from revaluation gains on foreign currency holdings, to cushion future exchange rate losses.
Explained
Section 45 of BAFIA 2073 requires a bank or financial institution doing foreign exchange business to adjust revaluation profits from exchange rate movements (other than in Indian currency) in its profit and loss account at the end of each fiscal year. If there is a revaluation gain, at least 25% of it must be transferred to the exchange equalization fund.
Under CAF 2015, exchange equalization reserves created as a cushion against adverse currency movements count as Tier 2 capital. The fund is not distributable as dividend.
Example
A bank records a revaluation gain of Rs 40 million on its US dollar position; at least Rs 10 million must go to the exchange equalization fund.
In Nepal
Indian currency is excluded because the Nepali rupee is pegged to it.
