Foreign exchange refers to foreign currencies and claims payable in foreign currency, and to the conversion of one currency into another.
Explained
Foreign exchange includes foreign currency notes and coins, balances in foreign currency accounts, foreign currency cheques, drafts, traveller's cheques and other instruments payable abroad. The foreign exchange market is where currencies are bought and sold, mainly among banks, central banks, corporates and dealers.
Transactions include spot deals (settled within two business days) and forward deals (settled at a future date at a rate fixed today), as well as swaps and options.
In Nepal, foreign exchange is regulated under the Foreign Exchange (Regulation) Act, 2019 BS and the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2058. NRB, through its Foreign Exchange Management Department, licenses banks and money changers to deal in foreign currency, issues foreign exchange directives on import payments, travel, education, medical treatment and other facilities, and manages the country's foreign exchange reserves. The Nepali rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee, while rates against other currencies are market-determined, with NRB publishing reference rates daily.
Nepal has current account convertibility for permitted transactions but maintains controls on the capital account.
