Spot Transaction
Also called Spot Exchange Rate, Spot Deal
A spot transaction is a foreign exchange deal settled immediately, normally within two business days, at the current spot rate.
Explained
In the interbank foreign exchange market, a spot deal is settled on the 'spot date', which is normally two business days after the trade date (T+2), allowing time for confirmation and payment across time zones. Some currency pairs settle on T+1.
Shorter settlements also exist: value today (cash) settles on the trade date, and value tomorrow (tom) settles the next business day. Deals settled later than spot are forward transactions.
The spot rate is the benchmark for all other foreign exchange prices: forward rates are derived from it by adding or subtracting the forward points, and cross rates between two non-dollar currencies are usually calculated through their spot rates against the US dollar.
For retail customers in Nepal, buying or selling foreign currency at a bank counter or converting a remittance is effectively a spot conversion at the bank's buying or selling rate for that day, which is set with reference to NRB's published rates and market conditions.
