Deflation
Also called Disinflation
Deflation is a sustained fall in the general price level, meaning inflation is negative; disinflation is a fall in the rate of inflation while prices still rise.
Explained
Causes: fall in aggregate demand (recession, tight money, falling credit), rise in productivity or supply, falling import prices, or a strong currency.
Why harmful deflation is dangerous:
- consumers postpone purchases expecting lower prices, cutting demand further;
- the real burden of debt rises, so borrowers default more, hurting banks' asset quality;
- firms' revenues fall, leading to wage cuts and unemployment;
- policy rates cannot fall much below zero, limiting monetary policy (liquidity trap).
This spiral is called a deflationary spiral; Japan in the 1990s-2000s is the classic example.
Good vs bad deflation: falling prices from productivity gains can be benign; falling prices from collapsing demand are harmful.
Policy response: expansionary monetary policy (rate cuts, liquidity injection) and expansionary fiscal policy (higher spending, tax cuts).
For Nepal, sustained deflation is rare; the more common issue is inflation linked to India and supply shocks.
- मूल्य अझ घट्ने आशामा उपभोक्ताले खरिद पछि सार्छन्, माग झन् घट्छ;
- ऋणको वास्तविक भार बढ्छ, ऋणी डुब्ने बढ्छ र बैंकको कर्जा गुणस्तर बिग्रन्छ;
- कम्पनीको आम्दानी घट्दा ज्याला कटौती र बेरोजगारी बढ्छ;
