A debit card is a payment card linked to a customer's bank account, so each purchase or withdrawal is deducted directly from the available balance.
Explained
A debit card lets the holder withdraw cash from ATMs, pay at POS terminals and, if enabled, pay online, using money already in the linked account. Because there is no credit line, the customer cannot normally spend more than the available balance.
Cards are issued by banks under a card scheme such as Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay or a domestic scheme such as NEPALPAY Card, and transactions are routed through card switches. Security features include an EMV chip, PIN, CVV for online use, OTP verification and SMS alerts. Contactless (NFC) debit cards allow tap-and-pay for small amounts.
Debit cards in Nepal are commonly called ATM cards. Banks set daily withdrawal and purchase limits within NRB directives and charge annual fees. Domestic debit cards are generally valid only for domestic use unless the bank enables international use within foreign exchange rules, for example for cards linked to foreign currency or dollar accounts.
The key difference from a credit card is that a debit card spends the customer's own money, while a credit card spends money borrowed from the issuer.
In Nepal
NRB caps cash withdrawal with a bank-issued debit card at Rs 20,000 per transaction, Rs 50,000 per day and Rs 3 lakh per month. Paying a merchant's bill by card is not limited by these caps. A bank may charge at most Rs 15 per transaction when its card is used at another bank's ATM in Nepal.
