Green PIN

Traditionally, banks printed a card's PIN in a sealed, tamper-proof mailer that the customer collected from the branch. Green PIN removes this step. The customer inserts the card at the bank's ATM, chooses an option such as 'Generate OTP for PIN', receives a one-time password on the registered mobile number, and then uses that OTP at the ATM to set a new PIN.

It is called 'green' because it eliminates printing PIN mailers and envelopes, making the process paperless and environment friendly. It also improves security, since no one else handles a printed PIN, and saves time because new cardholders and customers who forget their PIN need not visit the branch.

In Nepal, Nabil Bank launched a Green PIN service in 2020 allowing cardholders to set or reset their PIN at its ATMs, with the OTP valid for a limited time, and other banks have introduced similar OTP-based PIN services. The customer's mobile number must be updated with the bank for the service to work.

पहिले बैंकले कार्डको PIN सिल गरिएको मेलरमा छापेर ग्राहकलाई शाखाबाट दिन्थे। ग्रिन पिनमा ग्राहकले बैंकको एटिएममा कार्ड राखी 'Generate OTP for PIN' जस्तो विकल्प छान्छन्, दर्ता गरिएको मोबाइलमा OTP प्राप्त गर्छन् र सोही OTP प्रयोग गरी नयाँ PIN सेट गर्छन्।

PIN मेलर र खाम छाप्नु नपर्ने भएकाले यसलाई 'ग्रिन' भनिएको हो। यसले सुरक्षा बढाउँछ र शाखा जानु नपर्ने भएकाले समय बचत गर्छ। नेपालमा नबिल बैंकले सन् २०२० मा यो सेवा सुरु गरेको थियो र अन्य बैंकले पनि यस्तै OTP मा आधारित सेवा ल्याएका छन्। सेवा प्रयोग गर्न मोबाइल नम्बर अद्यावधिक हुनुपर्छ।
