An ATM is a self-service machine that lets bank customers withdraw cash and perform basic transactions without a teller.
Explained
ATMs provide round-the-clock access to cash. Typical services include cash withdrawal, balance enquiry, mini statements, PIN change, and in some machines cash deposit (cash deposit or recycler machines), fund transfer and bill payment.
A customer inserts or taps a card and enters the PIN. If the ATM belongs to the card-issuing bank, the transaction is an on-us transaction. If it belongs to another bank, the transaction is routed through a shared network or switch to the issuer for authorisation, and the issuer pays an interchange fee to the ATM owner; the customer may be charged a fee depending on bank policy.
Common issues include cash not dispensed but account debited, which banks must reverse under NRB's grievance rules, card retention and skimming fraud. Banks use EMV chip cards, anti-skimming devices, CCTV and SMS alerts to reduce fraud.
In Nepal, ATMs are operated by banks, and domestic interoperability is increasingly provided through national switching. Services such as Green PIN and cardless withdrawal have extended what ATMs can do.
In Nepal
A bank may charge at most Rs 15 per transaction when its customer uses the card at another bank's ATM inside Nepal. Cash withdrawal by debit card is capped at Rs 20,000 per transaction, Rs 50,000 per day and Rs 3 lakh per month; banks may set lower ATM cash limits for security or local reasons.
