Cardless withdrawal lets a customer take cash from an ATM without a physical card by authorising the withdrawal through mobile banking, connectIPS or a wallet and entering a one-time code at the ATM.
Explained
In a typical cardless withdrawal, the customer opens the mobile banking app, enters the amount and generates a request. The system sends an OTP or token. At the ATM, the customer selects the cardless option and enters the registered mobile number, the OTP and the amount, and the ATM dispenses cash. Some banks also let a customer generate a code for someone else to collect cash, making it a way of sending money.
In Nepal, individual banks introduced cardless withdrawal at their own ATMs, and NCHL launched an interbank cardless cash withdrawal service in 2024 that works through connectIPS and mobile banking at ATMs of participating banks. Wallet providers have also partnered with banks so that wallet users can withdraw cash at ATMs without a card.
Benefits include convenience when the card is lost or forgotten, lower risk of card skimming and wider use of digital channels. Providers set per-transaction and daily or monthly limits, and the OTP is valid only for a short time.
In Nepal
A wallet holder can take cash out through the provider's authorised agent, or through a bank's ATM, up to Rs 5,000 a day and Rs 25,000 a month. The payment service provider may set lower limits within these caps.
