Mobile banking is the provision of banking services through a mobile phone, using an app, USSD or SMS, so customers can check balances, transfer funds and make payments.
Explained
Mobile banking has become the most widely used digital channel in Nepal. Typical services include balance enquiry and statements, fund transfer within the bank and to other banks and wallets, bill and utility payments, mobile top-up, QR payments at merchants, loan and credit card payments, cheque book requests and stop-payment instructions, and cardless withdrawal.
Early mobile banking used SMS and USSD, which work on basic phones; most services are now app-based with features such as biometric login and interoperable QR. Interbank transfers from mobile banking are routed through switches such as NCHL's IPS and Retail Payment Switch or other PSOs.
NRB regulates mobile banking through its directives on payment systems and IT risk, which cover customer authentication (for example two-factor authentication), transaction limits, fees, data security and grievance handling. Limits and charges are revised from time to time, so the current directive should be checked. Risks include phishing, SIM swap fraud, malware and lost phones, so customers are advised never to share PINs or OTPs.
In Nepal
NRB caps transactions through a mobile banking app, including QR payments, at Rs 3 lakh per day. The cap does not apply to transfers between a customer's own accounts in the same bank, government taxes and fees, utility bills, insurance premiums, Social Security Fund contributions, school fees, payments to licensed stockbrokers and other special payments NRB approves. Banks may charge at most Rs 10 per interbank fund transfer made through the app.
