Internet banking lets customers access their bank accounts and carry out transactions through the bank's secure website.
Explained
Internet banking provides services similar to mobile banking through a web browser, and it is often preferred by businesses for larger and bulk transactions. Common services include account statements, fund transfers, bulk salary and vendor payments, bill and tax payments, fixed deposit opening, LC and guarantee requests for corporate clients, and service requests.
Retail internet banking is aimed at individuals, while corporate internet banking supports multiple users, maker-checker approval workflows and higher limits.
Security measures include a username and password, OTP or hardware token as a second factor, encrypted (HTTPS) connections, session timeouts and transaction alerts. Under NRB's directives, banks must apply strong customer authentication, set transaction limits and maintain IT security controls.
The main risks are phishing websites that imitate the bank's login page, malware and weak passwords. Internet banking, mobile banking and digital wallets together are referred to as electronic or digital banking channels.
In Nepal
NRB caps transactions through a bank's web application at Rs 20 lakh per day, with the same exemptions as mobile banking, such as government payments, utility bills and transfers between one's own accounts. The fee for an interbank fund transfer through internet banking is capped at Rs 10 per transaction.
