QR code payment lets a customer pay a merchant or person by scanning a quick response (QR) code with a mobile banking or wallet app.
Explained
A QR code stores payment details such as the merchant's identifier, account or wallet, and in some cases the amount. The payer scans it, confirms the amount and authorises with a PIN or biometric, and the merchant receives a confirmation.
- Static QR: a fixed printed code displayed at the shop; the customer enters the amount.
- Dynamic QR: generated for each transaction by a POS or billing system, with the amount and reference embedded.
QR payments need no card or POS terminal, which makes acceptance cheap for small merchants, and they have grown rapidly in Nepal.
To make QR codes of different networks work with any app, NRB issued the NepalQR standard. NCHL's NEPALPAY QR is implemented under this standard as part of the National Payment Switch, and other networks such as Fonepay operate QR schemes. Interoperability allows a customer of one bank or wallet to scan a QR issued by another network. Merchants obtain QR codes through their bank or PSP, and settlement reaches their account through the scheme's clearing arrangements.
In Nepal
QR payments made from a mobile banking app fall within the app limit of Rs 3 lakh a day, and QR payments from a wallet within the wallet limits. A natural person without a PAN whose daily business is up to Rs 5,000 can still get a merchant QR code on the basis of an official identity card.
