A credit card is a payment card that lets the holder buy goods and services or withdraw cash on credit up to a pre-approved limit and repay later.
Explained
A credit card is a revolving unsecured or partly secured credit facility. The issuing bank sets a credit limit based on the holder's income and credit history. Purchases made during a billing cycle appear on a monthly statement, which shows the total due, the minimum amount due and the payment due date.
If the full amount is paid by the due date, purchases usually carry no interest during the interest-free period. If only part is paid, interest is charged on the outstanding balance, often at a relatively high rate. Cash withdrawals generally attract interest from the date of withdrawal and an additional fee. Late payment fees apply if even the minimum is not paid.
In Nepal, credit cards are issued by BFIs under NRB directives, which govern eligibility, limits, interest and fee disclosure, and loan classification of overdue card dues. Card dues are reported to the Credit Information Bureau. International credit cards can be issued within NRB's foreign exchange rules and limits.
The card network (Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay or a domestic scheme) routes the transactions, while the issuing bank bears the credit risk.
In Nepal
Cash withdrawal with a credit card is capped at 10% of the card's approved limit. Money loaded into a wallet from a credit card may be used only to pay for goods and services, not moved to a bank account or withdrawn as cash.
