Currency Chest
नोटकोष
Also called Note chest, Note kosh
A store of NRB-owned currency kept at a designated bank branch in places without an NRB office, from which banks draw fresh notes and to which they deposit surplus and unfit notes.
Explained
A currency chest extends NRB's currency distribution network without NRB opening its own office in every district.
How it works
- NRB authorises a bank branch to operate a chest and holds the stock as NRB's property under joint custody.
- Banks in the area deposit excess cash and unfit notes into the chest and withdraw notes they need.
- A deposit into the chest is treated like a deposit with NRB, so it increases the bank's balance with NRB.
- The chest branch keeps separate registers and reports chest balances and movements to NRB.
Link with CRR For computing the cash reserve requirement, the Unified Directive allows cash in transit to a note chest in places without an NRB office to be counted, provided proof of deposit into and withdrawal from the chest is attached.
Exam relevance The RBB paper asks about "transaction at or with currency chest" and NBL Level 4 asks about "note chest and clean note policy", so link chest operations with vault management and clean note sorting.
