Clean Note Policy
सफा नोट नीति
TermRBBNBLADBLNRB
NRB's policy requiring banks to put only clean, fit notes back into circulation and to separate soiled or damaged notes for return to NRB or a currency chest.
Explained
The clean note policy keeps the quality of currency in circulation high and makes counterfeits easier to spot.
What the Unified Directive requires (Directive 21, clean note policy)
- Notes received by a BFI must be sorted into three groups: fit for re-issue through ATMs and machines, fit for re-issue over the counter, and unfit for circulation.
- Packets are marked with coloured slips: green for ATM-fit notes, white for counter-fit notes and red for unfit notes. Each slip shows the BFI and branch name and stamp, the counting staff's name and ID, signature and date.
- Notes must not be stapled; rubber, plastic or paper bands may be used, and staff must not write on notes.
- Torn, burnt, soaked, insect-damaged, badly printed, heavily marked notes, and notes bearing the former king's portrait, are classed as unfit and must not be re-issued.
- Unfit notes go to the currency chest or NRB; only fit notes may be paid out or used in exchange, after disinfection.
- Note storage furniture, vaults and counting rooms must be clean, lit and ventilated.
