Trust Receipt LoanTR loan
Also called TR loan, Trust receipt
A trust receipt loan is a short-term import loan in which the bank pays the supplier under a letter of credit and releases the goods to the importer, who holds them in trust for the bank and repays from sales.
Explained
When import documents arrive under an LC, the importer may not have cash to pay. The bank pays the foreign supplier and gives the documents to the importer against a trust receipt, a document in which the importer declares that the goods and the sale proceeds belong to the bank until the loan is repaid. The loan is thus a working capital facility tied to a specific import.
NRB rules
- Trust receipt loans, bills discounting and similar import loans can be given for at most 90 days.
- If a new loan not mentioned when the LC was opened is approved to repay a TR loan, the loan must be classified as loss.
- Purchased or discounted bills not recovered within 90 days of the due date are also classified as loss.
