NRB Bond
Also called Nepal Rastra Bank Bond, Central Bank Bill
A debt security issued by Nepal Rastra Bank itself to absorb liquidity from the banking system, used especially for structural excess liquidity.
Explained
The NRB Act 2058, Section 45 allows NRB to conduct open market operations in securities it has issued itself. NRB bonds are useful because they let NRB absorb large, lasting surpluses without depending on its stock of government securities.
- Monetary Policy 2082/83 stated that NRB bonds would be issued as and when necessary to manage the structural liquidity of the banking system.
- The mid-term review of 2082/83 reports that, to absorb structural liquidity and make the interest rate corridor effective, NRB issued Rs 200 billion of one-year NRB bonds in several tranches in Poush 2082.
Banks buy the bonds with their surplus reserves, which reduces reserve money. The bonds pay interest, so absorbing liquidity this way has a cost for NRB. They can also be used as collateral in NRB's repo and liquidity windows.
