Electronic Fund TransferEFT
Electronic fund transfer is any transfer of money from one account to another through electronic systems rather than paper instruments such as cheques or drafts.
Explained
EFT is a broad term covering many payment methods:
- Interbank transfers through RTGS for high-value payments.
- Transfers through NCHL-IPS and connectIPS, including direct credits and direct debits.
- Card payments at POS terminals and ATM withdrawals.
- Mobile and internet banking transfers.
- Wallet transfers and QR payments.
- Cross-border transfers through SWIFT and remittance networks.
EFT is faster, cheaper and safer than paper-based payments, creates an electronic audit trail useful for AML/CFT monitoring and reduces cash handling. Its risks include cyber fraud, unauthorised transfers and system outages.
In Nepal, the legal basis for electronic payments includes the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063, which gives legal recognition to electronic records and digital signatures, and the Payment and Settlement Act, 2075, which governs payment systems and their operators and providers, along with NRB's directives. The Payment and Settlement Act also addresses finality of settlement and liability for unauthorised electronic transfers.
