Direct Debit
Also called Auto Debit
A direct debit is a payment in which the payee, with the payer's prior authorisation (mandate), collects money directly from the payer's bank account.
Explained
In a direct credit, the payer pushes money to the payee. In a direct debit, the payee pulls money from the payer's account, which is why a valid mandate is essential.
The process is:
- The payer signs a mandate authorising the biller (for example an insurer, lender, school or utility) to debit the account, often with a maximum amount and frequency.
- The mandate is registered with the payer's bank, either on paper or electronically.
- On each due date, the biller's bank sends a debit request through the clearing system.
- The payer's bank debits the account if funds are available, and the money is credited to the biller.
Direct debits are convenient for recurring payments such as loan EMIs, insurance premiums and subscriptions, and they reduce missed payments. Payers can usually cancel the mandate and dispute unauthorised debits.
In Nepal, NCHL-IPS supports direct debit transactions between member banks, and banks also offer standing instructions within the same bank.
