Standing Instruction
Also called Standing Order
A standing instruction is a customer's instruction to the bank to make a fixed payment from their account to a specified beneficiary at regular intervals.
Explained
With a standing instruction, the payer controls the payment: the customer tells their own bank to pay a set amount on set dates, for example a monthly transfer to a recurring deposit, an EMI to a loan account in the same bank, rent to a landlord or a contribution to a family member's account.
Key features:
- The amount and frequency are fixed by the customer and remain until the customer changes or cancels the instruction or it expires.
- The bank executes the payment only if sufficient funds are available; it may charge a fee for failed attempts or for transfers to other banks.
- Transfers within the same bank are internal; transfers to other banks go through interbank systems such as IPS.
The difference from a direct debit is who initiates the payment. In a standing instruction, the payer's bank pushes a fixed amount on the payer's instruction. In a direct debit, the payee pulls the amount, which may vary, under a mandate the payer has given.
